Harter’s paint, pen-and-ink, and crayon illustrations feature bright colors and solid backgrounds so readers can focus on what the bears are doing at school. Debbie Harter’s artwork was influenced by Ralph Steadman and Arthur Rackham as well as other forms of art such as dance and music; she aspires to add the activity of these art forms into her own work. Not just an illustrator, Harter also creates jewelry, ceramics and mirrors. Debbie Harter has illustrated over 20 books for Barefoot, including the beloved Bear series and several singalongs. As a child, Debbie would lose herself in books (as long as they had pictures) and hopes to continue doing so until she is very old.
