The root chakra is the foundation on which all the other chakras are built. It is the area responsible for your basic survival needs like food, shelter and water. Everything starts with a foundation, and so it is with our human energy system. Your physical entrance into this world was through the root chakras of your mother and father. The first ten years of your life create the foundation from which you act and react for the rest of your life.
The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, at the coccyx. The primary color associated with the root chakra is red, and it also holds the vibration of black, brown and silvery gray, like the mineral hematite. The root chakra connects you with Mother Earth. What color is soil? Depending on where you live, the soil is typically red, brown or black.

The Characteristics of the Root Chakra
Just as the roots of a tree determine its life and strength, so, too, are the roots of the self a strong determining factor in personal growth. The physical part of a human being requires a place to live, food to eat and water to drink. Physical vitality depends upon nutrition and protection from the elements, along with a safe place to sleep and pure water to drink. The ability to stay focused on and achieve tasks is located at this chakra.
Vital Energy
The energy vibrating at the root chakra, or lack thereof, regulates your health and your passion for life. Do you have a lot of get-up-and-go or are you always tired? You may need more rest or better nutrition to restore your vital life force. Are you a mover and a shaker or are you a procrastinator? If you find that you are a procrastinator and you aren’t able to conjure up the energy to get things done, then it’s time to light a fire under your root chakra and get things moving.
