“Chalcedonies, which comprise agates, onyx and sardonyx, and jaspers, are cryptocrystalline or microcrystalline quartz composed of microscopic quartz crystals. Agate, Jasper and Chalcedony all have chemical and physical properties that are virtually indistinguishable. A general distinction can be made that agates are banded while chalcedony is not banded; jasper is heavily colored with minerals and may contain iron and other impurities that impart the color and density of the stones.
