Practicing Self-Observation by Margaret Ann Lembo

Are we generally a culture that lacks self-awareness? Self-observation is one of the best means to achieve self-knowledge—that is, the knowledge of one’s own philosophies and beliefs. Most philosophies and beliefs are established from birth to age ten and become part of our subconscious. Through the practice of self-observation, we can uncover these unconscious beliefs and determine if those beliefs are in alignment with our personal truth.

Self-observation is the intentional act of observing one’s own behaviors, reactions and actions as an interested, objective observer—that is, without judgment. Once the observation is made, a shift generally occurs without much action. The observation is often accompanied by a realization that one’s beliefs and thought-forms (manifestations of mental energy) were imposed or established by others, and a conscious decision can be made to discard what is no longer appropriate and retain that which has a positive influence.

Through self-observation, one’s level of self-importance is also revealed. Self-importance removes one’s ability to stay blank focused on love, kindness and tolerance. In order to become a better person, the shift of awareness from self-importance to love actualizes inner peace, health and well-being. Once achieved individually, this self-actualization can be transmitted by example to others. Inner peace brings awareness. Awareness brings love. Love brings awareness.

Many of the enlightened masters lived human lives on this planet with a focus on love. Throughout time, masters like Buddha, Christ, Sai Baba, Babaji, Mother Theresa and others focused their teachings and attention on love, kindness, compassion, tolerance and self-knowledge or self-awareness. (Throughout this book you will find the terms Christ consciousness and Buddha consciousness. These terms are not being used in a religious sense, but are spiritual terms that synoptically refer to the human ability to transform and heal while living within the consciousness of love and tolerance, thereby achieving inner peace.)

To begin a simple practice of self-observation, start now as you read this book. Observe how you hold the book. Become aware of your hands holding the book. How are you sitting? What are you sitting on, what is it made of, and where did the materials come from? Are you eating or drinking while you read? Do you smell a scent in the air? Is there sufficient lighting as you read? Through these basic observations, you will begin a journey toward a conscious awareness of yourself and your surroundings, thereby heightening your perceptions of self and the space around you. These observations are a small stepping stone to a larger sense of self-awareness, including an awareness of your thoughts, where they are coming from, what provoked them, and how to transition yourself out of unhealthy or challenging situations, all of which we will discuss further.

Yellow Energy and the Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus is the center for your ability to take in, absorb and integrate life and all it offers—the good as well as what you may perceive as the bad. The solar plexus manages the vibration of experiencing and digesting all you see and experience around you and in your life. It can be compared to the powerful and amazing sun shining brightly in the sky. The brilliance of light at this center brings mental clarity and the ability to see life from a greater perspective. It’s a great visual to imagine the sun shining at your solar plexus to warm you up and integrate all that life has to offer.

Marianne Williamson‘s quote below sums up the importance of shining your light and encouraging others to do the same.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. You are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within you. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
