About the stone: Ruby is the red variety (orangish-red to purplish red) of the mineral corundum which is aluminum oxide. Pink or purple stones are known as pink or purple sapphires.  Corundum crystallizes in the trigonal system. The color in ruby is caused by the minute presence of chromic oxide.
