Grape Agate Heart
Grape Agate Heart
Approximately 2 inches wide
Despite its trade name, grape agate is technically not a true agate in the strict geological sense because it usually lacks the banding characteristic of agate. It is more accurately a form of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. The name "grape agate" comes from its appearance: clusters of small, rounded spheres that resemble bunches of grapes. The grape-like shape is known as a botryoidal habit ("botryoidal" comes from the Greek word for a bunch of grapes).
