Melissa officinalis
Lemon balm, also known as Melissa or balm mint, is a perennial herb in the mint family. The species is native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean, Central Asia, and Iran. It has lemon-scented leaves and pale pink or white flowers. This plant genus is named "melissa," which means "honey bee" in ancient Greek, due to the flowers being very attractive to bees.
The Swiss-German Renaissance physician Paracelsus referred to melissa as the “elixir of life.” This herb was among those used during the Middle Ages on the floors of homes for their ability to mask or remove foul odors, for their insecticidal and antiseptic qualities, and to repel evil. Herbs used for this purpose were called “strewing herbs.”
