It has been around since prehistoric times but became better known in Ancient Greece, where it got its name, Onyx, from the Greek word "fingernail". It was thought that Eros, the Greek god of love and sexuality, clipped his fingernails. When these nails fell to Earth, they turned into Onyx. Archaeologists have discovered swords, amulets, shields, and even armor made from this stone.
