Chandra’s Magic Light

A heartwarming story set in Nepal of two resourceful sisters who bring the safety of solar-powered light to their family.

Quickly, Father, You must come to the market,” Chandra panted.

Father dropped his axe, “What has happened? Has there been an accident?”

“No, no,” said Chandra, her words spilling out all over the place. “There’s a man in the market who has a magic light!”

When the man in the market first shows the crowd of villagers his solar-powered tuki, Chandra thinks it must be magic. But it’s not magic; the tuki traps energy from the sun during the day and shines at night without creating any harmful smoke. To get a solar tuki for their family and cure their baby brother’s cough, Chandra and her big sister Deena will need to find a way to earn 500 Nepal rupees before the end of summer.

Chandra’s Magic Light provides  an authentic introduction to Nepali village culture. Includes map of Nepal and educational end matter Environmental Science: Global issue of solar power replacing unsafe, unhealthy fossil fuel power at core of story. Includes instructions for making a solar-powered pizza oven. Two sisters cooperate as young entrepreneurs to help their sick baby brother.
