Weaving Hope Baskets
The idea behind Weaving Hope is simple – fund new schools for Rwandan children with sales of beautiful handcrafted baskets made by local artisans in the small Rwandan village of Muhanga. The pro
This mission not only helps the children, it also provides opportunities for Rwandan women to earn a steady living and escape gender-based violence, inequality and discrimination. These authentic, handmade African baskets come directly from a women’s cooperative in the village of Muhanga. Your purchase helps them have a meaningful job to provide for their families, moving them from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency.
Weaving Hope currently has four handmade African basket bowl designs still in inventory. These were created via traditional methods by women artisans of the Muhanga village in Rwanda. Measuring approximately 12″ in diameter and 3″ in height, the baskets make great conversation pieces as part of your home décor. Display them as a wall hanging, a table centerpiece or a bedroom adornment.
Rwanda
The State of New Hampshire has a population of 1.34 million. The country of Rwanda is of comparable size, but supports a population over 11 million people … nearly ten times as many!
In 1994, over the course of 100 days, a violent genocide claimed nearly one million innocent Rwandan lives. A generation was lost. It tore at the very fabric of the Rwandan people, as they were left broken and traumatized. Yet they have been resilient, bound by “country”.
Twenty years later, they have remarkably achieved humanitarian reconciliation between the Hutus and Tutsis. They have grown economically, experienced societal development and moved bravely into the 21st century.
Despite the quite remarkable turnaround, some problems continue to persist. Half of the population continues to live in poverty.
The Anglican Church of Rwanda has been on a journey, walking with Rwandans through pain, poverty and violence into an increasingly hopeful future. Weaving Hope is joining this journey to move beyond hope and into action. With our efforts, we are supporting the building of schools for Rwandan children and meaningful jobs for the Muhanga women’s cooperative.
