About Copal from All About Smudging an eBook by Margaret Ann Lembo Copal is a resin often used by the Mayan culture. It is a gum that comes out of the Cieba tree. Copal clears out negativity and brings in positive spiritual energy. It has been documented as used as far back as the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican period. I became familiar with copal during my visits to Mexico for the Sacred Sites tours and Native American Church ceremonies. It is a golden or white-colored resin that you burn as an incense over charcoal. It’s beneficial for prayers, ceremonies, blessings and clearings. Pure essential oil of copal is not commonly found.
