Practice Gratitude, Thankfulness, and Appreciation

By Margaret Ann Lembo

When the season shifts to fall, I notice that I deepen my gratitude practice. I know that Thanksgiving will be arriving soon, and another New Year will be here before we know it. Join me in deepening the feelings of thankfulness and appreciation.

A gratitude practice is the regular habit of noticing, recognizing, and appreciating the good things in your life. Let’s take a moment to express gratitude. Feel thankful for the year that we just experienced, both the joys and the challenges, for the lessons they brought.

I like to practice gratitude while I am driving. I think about and am thankful for all the good in my life – specifically listing all that is good– and for all the good that is yet to come. I appreciate the blessings in advance that will occur.

Food preparation is a perfect time to be mindful of all that it took to get that egg, onion, or potato into your kitchen. I like to think about and send blessings to all the people involved, from the farmers and their families, accountants, marketing department, truck drivers, the local grocery store staff, and more. Sending blessings to others is an excellent use of the mental space while cooking. I’ve noticed that the food tastes better when I remember to do this practice.

Here are some ways to start a gratitude practice:

  • Write in a gratitude journal daily.
  • Send thank-you notes or letters of appreciation.
  • Practice gratitude in a contemplative state numerous times a week.
  • Express your appreciation to someone for being in your life.

Maintaining a regular gratitude practice enhances happiness and fosters compassionate relationships. It’s a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, too. Use the gratitude practice to encourage mindfulness and staying in the present moment.

And, most importantly, THANK YOU!
