“Resins Used for Smudging
Copal is a resin often used by the Mayan culture. It is a gum that comes out of the Cieba tree. Copal clears out negativity and brings in positive spiritual energy. It has been documented to have been used as far back as the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican people. I became familiar with copal during my visits to Mexico for the Sacred Sites tours as well as Native American Church ceremonies. It is a golden or white-colored resin that you burn as an incense over charcoal. It’s beneficial for prayers, ceremonies, blessings and clearings. Pure essential oil of copal is not commonly found.
Dragon’s Blood comes from the resin of a tree native to the Canary Islands and Morocco as well as from a rattan palm found on Indonesian islands. Just as the name infers, it is a dark-red resin that hardens much like the resin forms of frankincense, myrrh, and copal. The droplets or the dried resin are rolled into balls before they are sold. My first purchase of dragon’s blood was the size of a softball! I had to take a hammer to it in order to break it up into smaller pieces and powder for use in the smudging blend. The powdered form can be burned on charcoal and can be incorporated into candles, lotions, soaps, and stick incense.
Some consider it the strongest protection herb you can find. It is said to have aphrodisiac qualities, but the main purpose is protection. Dragon’s blood also comes in an oil and helps with psychic protection. The protection of this resin can also protect you from the less harmful yet still annoying challenges that may arise, especially when you are in large groups of people like at a fair, trade show, airport, or convention.
Frankincense is a resin from the sap of a tree. It instills a spiritual energy and raises the vibration of the area in which it is being utilized. This higher vibration naturally removes any lower energy to clear away what is no longer for the highest good and to replace it with high vibrations. This scent also brings forth the vibration of love, compassion, and kindness in alignment with Christ Consciousness or Buddha Consciousness. The essential oil is commonly used to maintain deep meditative states. Adding the oil to a blend adds purification and induces the ability to focus on a single intention: love.
Myrrh is a reddish brown resin that comes from the sap of a tree. Myrrh is a gum that is a fixative and strengthens the vibration of resins or oils it is combined with. Myrrh oil was used as an embalming agent for the deceased as well as an anointing oil/resin by the Eastern Orthodox Church. It calls forth the Holy Spirit or Great Spirit. Adding it to a smudge blend brings the Holy Spirit into your space. Used for over 4,000 years, it has been used for varied purposes from embalming to seduction.
Sandalwood is a fragrant wood. Sandalwood oil is derived from that wood. Mala beads, which are prayer beads used by Buddhists to keep track of mantras they chant, are often made out of sandalwood. The tree that the wood comes from is found in Nepal, India, and Hawaii. The scent helps you focus your mind during meditation and prayer. Sandalwood instills peace and encourages spirituality. The scent of sandalwood is also an aphrodisiac. Sandalwood oil has become extremely expensive and is rarely found at a reasonable price.”
